..:: Guide to Breeding ::..

[This guide will be updated as we learn more about the breeding mechanics of Diamond & Pearl]

Breeding is an important part of all the pokemon games, but it can be quite confusing, so I guess I'll write a guide on it.

Why Should I Breed?

Breeding allows pokemon to learn moves that they otherwise wouldn't be able to learn, as well as making it easier to get nice IVs. There are tricks that also make it easier to get good natures. These are all important factors in competitive pokemon battling.

Breeding Basics

In order to get 2 pokemon to breed, leave them both in a daycare. They must be of opposite gender and be in the same egg group in order to breed successfully. The egg groups are:

- Monster
- Dragon
- Ground
- Bug
- Plant
- Water A
- Water B
- Water C
- Indeterminate
- Fairy
- Humanshape
- Mineral
- No Egg

Pokemon in the 'No Egg' group cannot produce eggs, unless paired with a ditto. LEGENDARY POKEMON CANNOT BREED AT ALL. (except for manaphy, but the egg will just be a fione.)

Old Man's Phrases

The old day care man will tell you different things that inform you about how long it will take for the pokemon to produce an egg.

'The Two Seem To Get Along very well'- An egg will be produced rather quickly.

'The Two Seem To Get Along'- An egg will be produced at a medium rate.

'The Two Seem To Not Like Each Other'- It will take you a while to get an egg.

'The Two Prefer To Play With Other Pokemon Than Each Other'- If he says this you will not get an egg. This is probably because the pokemon are of the same gender or not in the same egg group.

Breeding Tricks

Magma Armor / Flame Body

If you have a pokemon with magma armor or flame body as a trait in your party, the time it takes to hatch the egg is reduced by 1/3.

Everstone

When the female or the ditto is holding an everstone, there is a 50% chance of their nature being passed down to the egg. Extremely helpful and time saving.

IV Breeding

3 IVs are passed down from the parent to the egg. 2 from one parent, and 1 from the other, at a random rate.

Ditto

Ditto makes you able to breed pokemon that are genderless or solely male. DITTO CANNOT BREED WITH LEGENDARIES (except for manaphy, but the egg will just be a fione.).

Smeargle Trick

Since smeargle is in the ground egg group, and can learn any move, all egg move combinations are legal on pokemon in the ground egg group. Just have smeargle learn the egg move(s) you want for the other pokemon, put them in the daycare, and your egg should come out with both egg moves.

And that's pretty much all you need to know about breeding! I hope this helps someone. :]
